What Is StudentAid BC

StudentAid BC is British Columbia’s student financial assistance program. Eligible students can apply through StudentAid BC to be considered for federal and provincial support, including Canada Student Loans, BC student loans, and grants where applicable.

Assistance depends on your circumstances, financial need, and eligible studies. StudentAid BC determines the type and amount of funding; LCC can explain its programs and help you understand the application steps.

Grants and Student Loans Explained

Type of assistanceWhat it means
GrantsGenerally do not need to be repaid when eligibility and study requirements are met. A reassessment or a change in enrolment can affect your entitlement.
Student loansMust be repaid under the applicable loan terms.
A combinationYour assessment may include both grants and loans. Review each part of your funding before accepting it.

Depending on the assessment and applicable rules, funding may help with tuition, required fees, books, and supplies. Full-time assistance may also consider eligible living costs.

StudentAid BC provides financial assistance rather than automatically making a program free. Funding may not cover all your costs.

Who Can Apply for StudentAid BC

To be considered, applicants generally need to:

Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person.

Have a valid Canadian Social Insurance Number.

Be enrolled in an eligible program at a designated post-secondary institution.

Meet the applicable course-load requirements and maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Protected persons may apply when they meet the requirements and provide the required status documentation. Living in BC alone does not establish eligibility; residency rules depend on your circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LCC a StudentAid BC designated school?

Yes. ISS Language and Career College of BC appears on StudentAid BC’s designated-school list. Designation allows eligible students in eligible programs to apply; it does not mean every LCC course or applicant qualifies.

Does StudentAid BC make my course free?

No. Your assessment may include loans, grants, or both, and may not cover every cost. Loans are repayable.

Can I apply if I work while studying?

Employment does not automatically rule out an application. Your income and other resources can affect your assessed financial need. Report the information required by StudentAid BC accurately.

Do I always need to have lived in BC for 12 months?

Residency rules vary by student category and circumstances. Some independent permanent residents and protected persons may meet an alternative rule. Check the official BC residency requirements before assuming you are ineligible.

Can international students apply?

A study permit or work permit alone does not meet StudentAid BC’s citizenship or status requirement. Applicants generally need Canadian citizenship, permanent residence, or protected person status, together with the other requirements.

How much funding could I receive?

StudentAid BC determines your amount through its assessment. Household circumstances, income and resources, eligible costs, and study details can affect the result. LCC cannot guarantee a funding amount.

Does every LCC TESOL or English course qualify?

No. Funding eligibility is specific to the program. The 12-week TESOL and Leadership Certificate is separate from LCC’s 8-week TESOL Certificate and English courses. Ask LCC about your exact program.

What happens if I withdraw or my circumstances change?

Contact LCC and StudentAid BC promptly. Changes can affect your assessment, grant entitlement, loan balance, and refund arrangements. Check the applicable policies before making a decision.
